Our History

Coombs Country Candy got its start 45 years ago, when Murray Lawlor first began his practice in the art of chocolate and sweets creations. Originally from Niagara Falls, Murray has honed his culinary candy skills over the years, by practicing and perfecting his original learned recipes.

Having a taste for business, Murray has owned and operated several locations across Canada, and into the United States producing these careful recipes, and creating products with a distinguished flair and true pride in quality. Murray’s love of people, and the excitement of the markets lead him to ventures like locations in Vancouver's Granville Island Market and Seattle’s busy and trendy Pike Place Market.

Vancouver Island was where Coombs Country Candy really began its origin and history—one of the few top notch Vancouver Island candy companies producing original chocolates and sweet delicacies. Coombs Country Candy was originally located next to "The Old Country Market" in Coombs, one of Vancouver Island’s more recognizable tourist hot spots, with a European style market known for its infamous “Goats on the Roof”.

Once Murray had a taste of the island lifestyle, he decided it was time for permanent roots into an area he loves to spend time in, with the welcoming support of a strong community. You can now find Murray and his crew at the entrance to the Alberni Valley, creating their delicious varieties of hand-made chocolates, kettle corns, hard candies and ice cream specialty treats.
